Measure the cargo-floor height, available setup space and folded storage space before comparing ramps. A longer ramp generally reduces the angle, but only when it can be supported securely at the vehicle.

Measure the loading height
Park on level ground and measure vertically from the ground to the exact surface where the upper end of the ramp will rest. Do not use the bumper height if the ramp will connect to the cargo floor. Record the measurement with the vehicle unloaded and repeat it if air suspension or cargo weight changes the ride height.
Open the tailgate and check that the chosen contact point is flat, stable and clear of trim that could flex. A high capacity number does not fix an insecure connection.
Compare ramp length with the space you have
For the same loading height, a longer ramp creates a lower angle than a shorter ramp. That can make the route easier to approach, but the ramp still needs enough clear space behind or beside the SUV. Measure the parking situations you use most often—not only the driveway at home.
- Loading height: ground to the ramp contact point.
- Setup length: clear ground available behind or beside the vehicle.
- Walking width: usable surface between any raised edges.
- Stored size: folded or collapsed dimensions inside the vehicle.
- Carrying weight: what the person setting up the ramp can handle safely.
Check the surface and first setup
Look for a walking surface that provides grip when damp, stable feet and a top connection that cannot slide sideways. Practise with the ramp flat before trying vehicle height. Use a harness rather than pulling the dog by the collar, and stop if the dog scrambles, freezes or repeatedly tries to jump off the side.
