Take two measurements while your dog rests
Wait until your dog is lying in a common sleeping position. Measure from the nose to the base of the tail, then measure the widest comfortable position across the shoulders and legs. Do not make the dog hold an unfamiliar pose.
Repeat the measurements during a full side stretch if your dog sometimes sleeps long. Use the larger numbers as your starting point.
Convert body measurements into usable bed space
Add room for the paws, turning and small position changes. Then compare your result with the flat sleeping area inside the bed. Product pages often lead with the outside length and width, which can include thick bolsters that reduce usable space.
- Flat mattress: most of the listed surface may be usable.
- Bolster bed: subtract the raised sides from length and width.
- Front opening: confirm that the low section is wide enough for entry.
- Foam thickness: check support separately from surface dimensions.
- Room placement: tape the bed outline on the floor before ordering.
Check entry height and care
A large bed can still be difficult to use when every edge is high. Look for one unobstructed entry and a base that does not move when the dog steps on it.
Confirm how the outer cover, waterproof liner and foam are cleaned. A washable cover does not necessarily mean the entire bed can go into a washing machine.

Should I buy a dog bed one size larger?
Use measurements rather than automatically moving up one labeled size. Choose the first size whose usable sleeping area accommodates the dog’s full resting position plus room to turn.
Do bolsters change dog bed sizing?
Yes. Bolsters reduce the flat sleeping area. Compare your dog’s measurements with the internal area between the bolsters, not only the bed’s outside dimensions.
